Meteor in Wisconsin Dazzles Midwest

A possible meteor in Wisconsin lit up the Midwest last night, as captured in this video via NBC Chicago.

If not a meteor, the light source — which some observers described as similar to lightning — could have been caused by space junk entering the atmosphere, scientists say.

So, what is a meteor? Formally a meteoroid, the term describes debris in the Solar System, sometimes as small as a grain of sand. A meteor that survives an impact to the Earth’s surface is called a meteorite.

A super-bright meteor, like the one in the video, is known as a fireball.
