Deepwater Horizon Explosion Leaves 11 Missing
The U.S. Coast Guard is still searching for at least 11 of the 126 workers aboard the Deepwater Horizon, an oil rig that exploded yesterday evening in the Gulf of Mexico. No fatalities have yet been reported, although at least seven people sustained injuries, including some severe burns.
Authorities say there’s the chance some of the missing workers are awaiting rescue in a life raft.
The blast occurred a little over 50 miles from Venice, Louisiana, and the Coast Guard used helicopters based in nearby cities New Orleans and Mobile, Alabama.
As of now, the Deepwater Horizon is still burning, although fire boats are doing the best that they can to extinguish the blaze. Even authorities are unable to estimate at this time how long it will take.
